Historically speaking, if we think of plant fossils as pressed plants then Nature pressed the first flower and the oldest specimens known are 400 million years old. Around the 17th & 18th centuries, botanists began using pressed plants for the purpose of identification, classification and to bring back new plants from distant lands. An organized collection of plant specimens is called an “Herbarium”.

Today, flower pressing is somewhat of a worldwide cult! The International Pressed Flower Art Society, based in Japan exhibits at worldwide events with some attendance records of over 40,000 people per event! The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society features a Pressed Plant competition every year at the Philadelphia Flower Show where entries are judged for originality, color balance, interpretation and execution.

Gain a new appreciation for the flowers in your garden as you learn how to extend their lives through flower pressing. You can learn about collecting, handling, pressing and storing at Janie’s well-received flower pressing workshops at Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania.     Inspiring

“ There is nothing more inspiring than a garden. From the blank winter canvas to the fresh green sprouts and seedlings of spring, the riot of summer’s palette and autumn’s rich tones and textures, there is a wealth of inspiration for the painters, photographers, gardeners and all the neighbors who pass by my garden. Be sure to return to "Great Things" for inspiring thoughts that change monthly.” -JG

    Recycling
“ As a gardener, I am proud when I tell everybody about my family’s recycling efforts. Along with recycling our paper and plastic, we compost all vegetable and fruit related waste. Used coffee grounds are saved for our acid-loving plants, such as azaleas. Crushed eggs shells can be added to a compost pile, if washed. Shells are a high source of calcium and beneficial to the soil. In fact, the art of flower pressing is a recycling process!" -JG
