Historically speaking, if we think of plant fossils
as pressed plants then Nature pressed the first flower and the oldest
specimens known are 400 million years
old. Around the 17th & 18th centuries, botanists began using pressed
plants for the purpose of identification, classification and to bring back
new plants
from distant lands. An organized collection of plant specimens is called
an “Herbarium”.
Today, flower pressing is somewhat of a worldwide
cult! The International Pressed Flower Art Society,
based in Japan exhibits at worldwide events
with some
attendance records of over 40,000 people per event! The Pennsylvania
Horticultural Society features a Pressed Plant competition every year at the Philadelphia
Flower Show where entries are judged for originality, color balance, interpretation
and execution.
